What’s it all about?

What is ear wax?

Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It helps protect the ear by trapping dust, dirt, and bacteria, preventing them from reaching the inner ear. It also keeps the skin inside the ear moist and prevents irritation. Normally, ear wax moves to the outer ear on its own and falls out or can be wiped away, but sometimes it gets stuck and builds up, requiring manual removal to avoid discomfort or hearing issues.

What is ear irrigation?

Ear irrigation is a common and gentle method used to remove excess or stubborn ear wax. It involves flushing the ear canal with a controlled stream of warm water or saline solution to soften and wash out the wax. The procedure is usually quick, safe, and painless. It's often recommended when wax build-up causes discomfort, hearing loss, or blocks the view of the eardrum.

What is ear mircosuction?

Microsuction is a safe and effective method of removing ear wax using a small, gentle suction device. We use a microscope or magnifying loupe to clearly see inside the ear canal while carefully suctioning out the wax. Unlike irrigation, micro-suction doesn’t involve water, making it a cleaner and more precise option, especially for people with ear infections, perforated eardrums, or who have had ear surgery.

What is manual removal?

Manual removal involves using a small pair of special forceps to remove wax or foreign bodies that may have become lodged in the ear canal. It is a safe procedure with minimal discomfort.

How can I tell if my ears need wax removed?

You might need ear wax removed if you're experiencing symptoms like a feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear, reduced hearing, earache, ringing (tinnitus), dizziness, or itchiness. Some people also notice a muffled or “underwater” sensation. In more severe cases, wax build-up can even affect balance. If you're unsure, book a check-up with us and we can confirm whether wax is the cause and if removal is needed.
